Revised & Updated Return

Correct a filed return, or file one you missed.

A revised return under section 139(5) corrects a return already filed and can be submitted until 31 December of the assessment year, without additional tax beyond what was actually owed.

Once that window closes the route is ITR-U, the updated return, available for up to four years from the end of the assessment year. It carries additional tax of 25% to 70% of the tax and interest depending on how late it is, and cannot be used to claim a refund or increase a loss.

Filing an updated return before the department finds the omission is almost always cheaper than being assessed on it.

What is included

  • The correct route determined by the deadline

  • Proof of any additional tax paid

Questions

How far back can I file an updated return?

Up to four years from the end of the relevant assessment year, since the Finance Act 2025 extended it from two. The additional tax rises the longer you leave it — 25% within a year, up to 70% in the fourth.
