Trust Registration
A trust deed, registered with the sub-registrar.
A trust is the oldest and simplest not-for-profit form in India: a settlor transfers property to trustees to hold for a charitable purpose. It needs a minimum of two trustees and a deed registered with the sub-registrar in whose jurisdiction the property sits.
It is quicker and cheaper to form than a society or a Section 8 company and it files less. What it gives up is public credibility with institutional funders, who can inspect a company's filings and cannot inspect a trust's.
The registration that matters for fundraising is 12A and 80G, and we file both alongside.

Questions
Trust, society or Section 8 company?
A trust is quickest and files least, and suits a family or a small charitable purpose. A society suits a membership body. A Section 8 company suits anyone seeking CSR or institutional funding, because its filings are public and a funder can diligence it.
