BIS Certification
The ISI mark, and the registration scheme for electronics.
BIS certification is compulsory for products covered by a Quality Control Order, and the list has expanded considerably — from cement, steel and cables to electronics, toys and footwear.
There are two routes. The standard ISI mark scheme involves a factory inspection and ongoing surveillance. The Compulsory Registration Scheme, which covers most electronics and IT products, is based on testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory without a factory visit.
Selling a notified product without certification is an offence, and consignments are stopped at customs on import.
