Legal Name Change
Gazette notification, and the record updated.
Changing a name legally is a three-step process: a sworn affidavit before a notary, publication in two newspapers, and notification in the Gazette of India. The gazette notification is what makes the change enforceable against institutions.
The part people underestimate is what follows. PAN, Aadhaar, passport, bank accounts, property records, educational certificates and employment records all have to be updated separately, each with its own process.
For a change after marriage or divorce, the marriage certificate or decree usually substitutes for parts of this — worth checking before paying for a full gazette notification.

Questions
Is a gazette notification necessary to change my name?
For most institutional purposes, yes — banks, the passport office and employers generally require it. An affidavit alone is often accepted for informal use but will not hold where a formal record has to be amended.
