Halal Certification
Required for export to most Gulf and Southeast Asian markets.
Halal certification confirms that a product and the process that made it comply with Islamic dietary law. It is a commercial requirement rather than an Indian legal one, but importing countries across the Gulf, Malaysia and Indonesia will not clear uncertified consignments.
Certification covers ingredients, processing aids, cleaning agents, storage and transport — cross-contamination at any stage disqualifies the product, so the audit looks at the whole line rather than the recipe.
India has several certification bodies and importing countries recognise different ones, so the body has to be chosen against the destination market before the audit begins.

Questions
Is halal certification legally required in India?
No. It is a market requirement, not an Indian statutory one. It becomes effectively compulsory only if you export to countries that require it, or sell to domestic buyers who specify it.
