Trade Licence
Municipal permission to trade from the premises.
A trade licence is issued by the municipal corporation and confirms that your trade may be carried on at that address without nuisance or health hazard. It is separate from the shop and establishment registration.
Food, manufacturing and anything using machinery generally need one. It has to be applied for before the business begins, and it is renewed each year, usually before 31 March.
The requirements and the fee are set by the local body, so they differ between cities.

Questions
Is a trade licence the same as shop and establishment registration?
No. Shop and establishment registration is under the state labour Act and concerns employment conditions. A trade licence is from the municipal body and concerns whether the trade may be carried on at that location. Many businesses need both.
