A municipal trade licence is renewed annually, in most corporations before 31 March. Trading on a lapsed licence is trading unlicensed and carries a penalty and, in some corporations, sealing of the premises.
The renewal is also when changes get recorded — a new activity added, a change of premises, or a change in the constitution of the business. Renewing without disclosing a change leaves the licence describing something you no longer do.
Fees vary by corporation and by the category and floor area of the premises.

What happens if a trade licence lapses?
You are trading without a licence, which carries a penalty and, in several corporations, the power to seal the premises. Renewal after expiry usually attracts a late fee and can require a fresh application if the gap is long.
